The first chapter presents some recent results developed by the authors in heterogeneous shell theory. The authors formulate the relations and equations of the classic Kirchhoff-Love linear theory in curvilinear orthogonal coordinates. The shell is assumed to be multilayered or continuously variable across the thickness. The authors also derive the equations of a refined linear theory where it is assumed that the surface normal to the reference remains direct after deformation, but it does not remain orthogonal to the surface afterwards. The second chapter discusses numerical-analytical methods that the authors use to solve various boundary value problems of the shell theories of the first chapter. These are the discrete-orthogonalization method, the spline-collocation method and the discrete Fourier series method. The final third chapter presents solutions of certain boundary value problems for anisotropic heterogeneous shells based on the classical model. More precisely, the authors examine here the equilibrium problems for multilayer shallow rectangular in-plane shells for noncircular cylindrical shells and for shells of revolution. The chapter also considers analytical-numerical solutions of free vibration problems for rectangular plates and conical shells. The results are presented in many graphs and tables, and an analysis of the results is given.
