The article deals with locally defined operators \(K\) mapping the set \(CM_+(I)\) of nondecreasing and continuous (real) functions into itself. Here, \(I\) is an interval of \(\mathbb R\); recall that \(K\) is locally defined if \(\varphi|_{J \cap I} = \psi|_{J \cap I}\) implies \(K\varphi|_{J \cap I} = K\psi|_{J \cap I}\) for every open interval \(J\) of \(\mathbb R\). The main result is following: a locally defined operator \(K\) maps \(CM_+(I)\) into itself if and only if it is a superposition (Nemytskii) operator \(K(\varphi)(x) = h(x,\varphi(x))\) generated by a function \(H(t,x)\) that is continuous in both variables and nondecreasing with respect to each variables. Locally defined operators mapping \(CM_\pm(I)\) into \(CM_\pm(I)\) for all other three combinations of \(\pm\) are considered also (\(CM_-(I)\) is defined in a similar manner as \(CM_+(I)\)).
