    Let G be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over an algebraically closed field K of prime characteristic. Let J be an elementary abelian subgroup of G. J is called a Jordan subgroup if (i) \(N_ G(J)\) is a finite group; (ii) J is a minimal normal subgroup of \(N_ G(J)\); (iii) If \(A\supset J\) is an abelian subgroup such that \(N_ G(A)\supset N_ G(J)\) then \(N_ G(A)=N_ G(J)\). The author describes Jordan subgroups of G. In particular, we have the following list for \(N_ G(J)\) (up to conjugacy in Aut(G)) in which the first multiplier is the order of J: \(A_{p^ n-1}\), \(n\geq 1:\) \(p^{2n}\cdot Sp_{2n}(p)\); \(B_ n\), \(n\geq 2:\) \(2^{2n}\cdot S^{2n+1}\); \(C_{2^{n-1}}\), \(n\geq 3:\) \(2^{2n}\cdot O^-_{2n}(2)\); \(D_{2^{n-1}}\), \(n\geq 3:\) \(2^{2n}\cdot O^+_{2n}(2)\); \(D_{n+1}\), \(n\geq 3:\) \(2^{2n}\cdot S_{2n+2}\); \(E_ 6:\) \(3^ 3\cdot 3^ 3\cdot SL_ 3(3)\); \(E_ 8:\) \(2^ 5\cdot 2^{10}\cdot SL_ 3(2)\); \(E_ 8:\) \(5^ 3\cdot SL(5)\); \(F_ 4:\) \(3^ 3\cdot SL_ 3(3)\); \(G_ 2:\) \(2^ 3\cdot SL_ 3(2)\). Here p is a prime different from char(K). It may be mentioned that Jordan subgroups have applications to the theory of finite simple groups of Lie type.
