The authors construct a finitely presented monoid with infinitely generated group of units. Let \(FG_\infty\) be the free group on infinite generators \(a_0,a_1,\dots\), and let \(\tau\colon FG_\infty\to FG_\infty\) be the morphism defined by \(\tau(a_i)=a_{i+1}\). Let \(M_1=\text{BR}(FG_\infty,\tau)\) be the Bruck-Reilly extension. Then, \(M_1\) is a monoid generated by four elements \(a\), \(a^{-1}\), \(b\), \(c\). Let \(\theta\colon M_1\to M_1\) be a morphism defined by \(\theta(b)=b\), \(\theta(c)=c\), \(\theta(a^{\pm 1})=ba^{\pm 1}c\). Then, the Bruck-Reilly extension \(M=\text{BR}(M_1,\theta)\) is a finitely presented monoid with the unit group isomorphic to \(FG_\infty\).
