In [J. Number Theory 12, 2--9 (1980; Zbl 0423.10015)] the reviewer published an identity involving Dedekind sums, the structure of which clearly relates to the familiar Hecke operators on \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)\). Because a number of papers have been published on the topic since 1980, after calling the result ``Knopp's identity'', I am taking this opportunity to clarify its origin. The identity was proved by Dedekind himself in the case when the modulus is prime. Hans Petersson conjectured the identity for general modulus \(n\in \mathbb Z^+\), and sent a postcard stating the conjecture and a suggestion of the connection with Hecke operators to my late colleague, Emil Grosswald. In turn, Grosswald showed me Peterssons's card and suggested I prove Petersson's conjectured identity. In light of this I would prefer the designation ``Dedekind-Petersson-Knopp identity'' or ``Dedekind-Petersson-Grosswald-Knopp identity''. The paper under review derives from earlier work of \textit{B. Chen} and \textit{Z.-W. Sun} [J. Number Theory 97, No. 1, 186--198 (2002; Zbl 1033.11017)], who generalized the DPGK identity by replacing Dedekind sums with sums formed from ``periodic uniform functions''. Here the author derives six further related generalizations. The proofs are elementary but not completely straightforward.
