The present article extends work by the same authors (namely [\textit{A. Fialowski} and \textit{K. Iohara}, Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci. (5) 22, No. 2, 835--852 (2021; Zbl 1493.17020)] to the Lie subalgebras of orthogonal and symplectic matrices. Observe that there are different types of infinite rank matrices: the inductive limit \(gl(R)\) of the Lie algebras of matrices \(gl_n(R)\to gl_{n+1}(R)\) with values in a \(k\)-algebra \(R\) has been thoroughly studied and led to the famous Loday-Quillen-Tsygan theorem stating that the Lie algebra homology of \(gl(R)\) (with trivial coefficients in \(k\)) is a Hopf algebra whose primitives are the (shifted) cyclic homology of \(R\). Similar theorems are true in the orthogonal and symplectic case and involve the \textit{dihedral homology} of \(R\) (the homology of the subcomplex of the Hochschild complex of \(R\) given by coinvariants under a dihedral group), see e.g. [\textit{J.-L. Loday}, Cyclic homology. 2nd ed. Berlin: Springer-Verlag (1998; Zbl 0885.18007)]. On the other hand, Fialowski and Iohara study the (associative) algebra of \textit{Jacobi matrices} \[J(R):=\{(m_{ij})_{i,j\in{\mathbb Z}}\,|\,m_{ij}\in R,\,\,\exists N:m_{ij}=0 \,\, (\forall i,j:|i-j|>N)\,\},\] which plays a role in the mathematics and physics related to the KP hierarchy. In case \(R\) is equipped with a \(k\)-linear anti-involution, one can define a transpose map and therefore the Lie subalgebras of \(J(R)\) of orthogonal and symplectic matrices. The main theorem (Theorem 4.4) states that the primitives of the Hopf algebra given by the Lie algebra homology of orthogonal or symplectic matrices are given by the (shifted) dihedral homology of \(R\). The notable difference with the above theorem for inductive limit Lie algebras is that here the degree shift is by two units. The proof relies on the proof for the inductive limit Lie algebras. Namely, the authors show (Corollary 3.4) that the homology of the orthogonal or symplectic Lie subalgebras in \(J(R)\) is isomorphic to the homology of the inductive limit Lie subalgebras of orthogonal and symplectic subalgebras in the associative algebra \(J(R)\). Using then the isomorphism \(HH_P(R)\cong HH_{p+1}(J(R))\) between the (shifted) Hochschild homologies of \(R\) and \(J(R)\) (which the authors established in their paper cited in the beginning), it remains to explore how this isomorphism is compatible with the action of the dihedral group. The authors conclude with a computation of the universal central extension of the orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras. The article contains an appendix on the significance of \(J(R)\) in soliton theory.
