Recently there has been renewed interest in algorithms for deriving symbolic solutions of algebraic ordinary differential equations (AODEs). In particular, the algebro-geometric method has been successfully applied; the differential polynomial of an AODE of order 1 is viewed as defining an algebraic curve, and from a parametrization of this curve a formula solution of the AODE is derived, if such a formula exists in a given class. The authors apply this approach for deciding whether a given autonomous AODE of order 1 has a rational liouvillian general solution, and for computing such a solution in the positive case.
