    The Müntz approximation theorem assures that the span of the even powers \(1, x^2, x^4, \ldots\) is dense in \(C[0,1]\). The author has formulated the following problem: \begin{itemize} \item[] Given \(\varepsilon > 0\), find an integer \(n\geq 0\) and coefficients \(c_0,\ldots,c_n\) such that \(\vert x-\sum_{k=0}^{n} c_k x^{2k} \vert \leq \varepsilon\), \(x\in [0,1]\). \end{itemize} The answer was given by the author as follows: \begin{itemize} \item[] If \(\varepsilon < \frac{1}{2}\), then any solution of the above problem has \(n>\frac{1}{20 \varepsilon}\) and \(\max_{0\leq k \leq n} \vert c_k \vert > 0.75 \varepsilon 2^{1/(40 \varepsilon)}\). \end{itemize} Some numerical estimates are also discussed.
