After an extensive historical essay about the Hölder inequality, with the aim to show once more that the name attached to most results is not that of the mathematician who first discovered them [Reviewer's remark: maybe they carry the name of the person who first realized their importance], the author offers a new proof of its equivalence to the Minkowski inequality [for a previous proof see, e.g., \textit{H. L. Royden}, ``Real analysis'', 3rd ed. (1988; Zbl 0704.26006)].
