Denote by \(\gamma_k(G)\) the \(k\)-th member of the lower central series of \(G\), by \(\Gamma_k(G)\) the \(k\)-th member of the upper central series of \(G\). The author considers only finite \(p\)-groups. She proves that if \(\gamma_{k+1}(G)\) has rank \(r\), then the rank of \(G/\Gamma_{2k}(G)\) is bounded by some function depending on \(r\) and \(p\). She also proves that if \(G/\Gamma_k(G)\) has rank \(r\), then the rank of \(\gamma_{k+1}(G)\) is bounded by some function depending on \(r\) and~\(p\).
