On the \(m\)-th roots of a complex matrix (English)

The Jordan structure of the \(m\)-th roots of a complex matrix \(A\) is studied. A nonsingular matrix \(A\) is considered and a new constructive proof for the Jordan canonical form of its \(m\)-th root is presented. The proof is based on spectral analysis of matrix polynomials. It yields the Jordan chains of the \(m\)-th roots. A known uniqueness statement is also generalized. The methods by \textit{G. W. Cross} and \textit{P. Lancaster} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 1, 289-293 (1974; Zbl 0283.15008)] are used to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of \(m\)-th roots of a singular matrix.
