In this short survey note, the author explains what a Hasse principle for quadratic forms is. Let \(q\) be a quadratic form over a field \(F\) of characteristic not \(2\), and let \(\Omega\) be a set of valuations of \(F\). Let \(F_v\) denote the completion of \(F\) with respect to \(v\in \Omega\). The Hasse principle for \((F,\Omega)\) holds if a quadratic form \(q\) over \(F\) that is isotropic over \(F_v\) for all \(v\in \Omega\) is already isotropic over \(F\). The author mentions the classical Hasse-Minkowski theorem that states that the Hasse principle holds for \(\mathbb{Q}\) if \(\Omega\) is the set of all discrete valuations and the absolute value. He cites a recent result by \textit{J.-L. Colliot-Thélène} et al. [Comment. Math. Helv. 87, No. 4, 1011--1033 (2012; Zbl 1332.11065)] that states that \(\mathbb{Q}_p(t)\) (\(p\) odd) satisfies the Hasse principle for \(\Omega\) the set of all discrete valuations, and he mentions that this can be used to conclude that \(u(\mathbb{Q}_p(t))=8\), where the \(u\)-invariant of a field \(F\) is defined to be the supremum of the dimensions of anisotropic quadratic forms over \(F\).
