Let \(\theta\) be a Lebesgue measurable function on the real line \({\mathbb R}= (-\infty,\infty)\), and for \(a_0> 0\), \(b_0> 0\), and integers \(j\), \(k\), let the function \(\theta_{j,k}\) be defined by \(\theta_{j,k}(x)= a^{-1/2}_0\theta(a^{-1/2}_0 x- kb_0)\). The wavelet transform of \(f\), \(W_\theta(f)\), is defined by NEWLINE\[NEWLINEW_\theta(f)_{j,k}= a_{j,k}= (f, \theta_{j,k})= \int^\infty_{-\infty} f(x)\,\overline{\mathcal J}_{j,k}(x)\,dx.NEWLINE\]NEWLINE If \(\{\theta_{j,k}\}\), \(\{\varphi_{j,k}\}\), \(\{\psi_{j,k}\}\), are complete orthonormal sets in \(L^2({\mathbb R})\), then the wavelet translation \(\tau_x(f)\) and if \(g(x)=\sum_{j,k} b_{j,k} \underline{\varphi}_{j,k}(x)\), the wavelet convolution \((f\#g)\) are defined by \(\tau_x(f)(y)= \Sigma_{j,k} a_{j,k}\psi_{j,k}(x)\), NEWLINE\[NEWLINE\rho_{j,k}(y)= \int^\infty_{-\infty} D(x,y,z)\,f(z)\,dz,NEWLINE\]NEWLINE where \(D(x,y,z)= \Sigma_{j,k}\psi_{j,k}(x)\), \(\overline\rho_{j,k}(z)\), and NEWLINE\[NEWLINE(f\#g)(x)= \Sigma_{j,k} a_{j,k} b_{j,k}\psi_{j,k}(x)= \int^\infty_{-\infty} \tau_x(f)(y)\,g(y)\,dy.NEWLINE\]NEWLINE The first main inequality of the paper in \(L^2({\mathbb R})=\{h:\| h\|_2<\infty\}\), where NEWLINE\[NEWLINE\| h\|_2= \Biggl(\int^\infty_{-\infty} |h(x)|^2 dx\Biggr)^{1/2},NEWLINE\]NEWLINE is derived as \(\|(f\# g)\|_2\leq\| f\|_2\| g\|_2\). Other inequalities are derived by imposing conditions on the function \(D\), and then applying fractional integral operator estimates.NEWLINENEWLINE Reviewer's comments:NEWLINENEWLINE (1) Since NEWLINE\[NEWLINE\int^\infty_{-\infty} \int^\infty_{-\infty} |y-z|^{-1/2} |f(z)\| g(y)|\,dy\,dz= \int^\infty_{-\infty} |g(y)|\,I_{1/2}(|f|)(y)\,dy\leq\| g\|_{r'}\| I_{1/2}(f)\|_r,NEWLINE\]NEWLINE amendments are required to the results stated in Theorems 4.2 and 4.3 of the paper. (2) Various proofs of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality by applying results involving rearrangements of functions or the Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem are presented in Chapter 5 of [the reviewer, Aspects of the theory of bounded integral operators in \(L^p\)-spaces. London-New York: Academic Press (1971; Zbl 0219.44002)]. A proof which does not apply results involving rearrangements of functions is presented in the reviewer's paper [Bull. Math. 12, 1--31 (1984; Zbl 0598.26017)].
