From the authors' introduction: ``The aim of this paper is to provide a concise survey of some aspects of the theory of plane valuations, adding some comments upon more general valuations when it is possible. For those valuations, we describe value semigroup, graded algebra and Poincaré series emphasizing on the recent study of the same algebraic objects for finite families of valuations and their relations with the corresponding ones for reduced germs of plane curves.''NEWLINENEWLINELet \(\nu\) be a valuation of a field \(K\) and let \(R\) be a noetherian local domain having \(K\) as field of fractions which is dominated by \(\nu\); \(S=\{\nu(f)\mid f\in R\setminus\{0\}\}\) is the value semigroup (of \(\nu\) associated with \(R\)). In section 2 the authors collect results on \(S\), among them a recent result of \textit{S. D. Cutkosky} [``Semigroups of valuations dominating local domains'', \url{arxiv:0801.0449}]. Neither the result of Cutkosky nor the result given in Prop. 2.4 characterize those semigroups which are semigroups of valuations associated with a local domain.NEWLINENEWLINESection 3 is concerned with the graded ring \(\mathrm{gr}_\nu(R)\) of \(R\) relative to \(\nu\). The main result is Prop.\ 3.2; it is shown that \(\mathrm{gr}_\nu(R)\) can be considered as a graded module over a polynomial ring over the residue field of \(R\), and how to compute its syzygy modules.NEWLINENEWLINESections 4 and 5 are concerned with plane valuations: here \(R\) is a two-dimensional regular local ring. The notions of Hamburger-Noether expansion, sequence of values, Puiseux exponents, maximal contact values, generating sequence and Poincaré series are introduced. \textit{M. Spivakovsky} [Am. J. Math. 112, No. 1, 107--156 (1990; Zbl 0716.13003)] has shown that there is a bijective correspondence between the set of plane valuations (of \(K\), centered at \(R\)) and the set of simple sequences of point blowing-ups of the scheme \(\mathrm{Spec}(R)\). Using the Hamburger-Noether expansions, the plane valuations are classified in five types (cf. also [\textit{C. Favre} and \textit{M. Jonsson}, The valuative tree. Lecture Notes in Mathematics 1853. Berlin: Springer. (2004; Zbl 1064.14024)]).NEWLINENEWLINEIn section 6 the authors consider a finite family of plane divisorial valuations and extend some of the results of the earlier section to this case, in particular, when \(R\) is complete. Lastly, in section 7, let \(\nu\) be a plane divisorial valuation; the notion of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals of \(\nu\) is introduced. The authors studied this series in a recent paper [Adv. Math. 225, No. 2, 1046--1068 (2010; Zbl 1206.14011)]; the main result of this paper is given as Proposition 7.4.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1242.11004].
