This paper deals with fixed points and best proximity points in partially ordered sets \((X,\leq )\). Given a partially ordered set \(X\), a mapping \(T: X\to X\) is said to be nondecreasing if \(Tx\leq Ty\) whenever \(x\leq y\). A version of Banach contraction theorem in these spaces was given in [\textit{J. J. Nieto} and \textit{R. Rodríguez-López}, Order 22, No. 3, 223--239 (2005; Zbl 1095.47013)] which is taken as the initial point for this work. More precisely, authors are interested in the study of best proximity points under conditions of partial order. Given two subsets \(A\) and \(B\) of a metric space \((X,d)\), a best proximity pair \((a,b)\) is a pair \((a,b)\in A\times B\) such that \(d(a,b)=\inf\{ d(x,y): x\in A, y\in B\}\). Notice that, if \(A\cap B\neq \emptyset\) and sets are closed, this gives a common point. Mappings \(T: A\times B\to A\times B\) such that \(T(A)\subseteq B\) and \(T(B)\subseteq A\) are also considered, these mappings are typically called cyclic mappings. Then, a best proximity point \(p\in A\) is such that \((p,Tp)\) is a best proximity pair between \(A\) and \(B\). The paper contains a number of results and examples on existence best proximity points and common best proximity points for cyclic mappings which satisfy certain contractive hypothesis and monotonicity conditions in relation to a complete partially ordered metric spaces. The paper closes up with a nice discussion about how result we find here are related to some other recent results in the theory.
