The book covers various aspects of strong and super strong magnetic fields which include technical details on setups that generate impulsive fields, accompanying side effects, practical applications, and the theoretical background with analyses of physical processes involved. The text of the book is written in 10+429 pages and divided into ten main chapters, each followed by an extensive list of references. The introductory Chapter 1 gives basic ideas on magnetic fields associated with electric currents in various configurations of conductors, including solenoids, and the related side effects. Essentials for numerical estimates of inductivity of single-turn magnets are dealt with in Chapter 2. Special attention is paid to boundary conditions and the skin-effect present in devices with pulsed magnetic fields. Chapter 3 is devoted to the magnetic field diffusion (linear and nonlinear) and the problem of heating in various configurations of conductors. Details and requirements related to power supplies of magnetic systems are considered in Chapter 4. Among other things, one finds here discussions on optimization and necessary parameter matching for solenoids and power sources. Chapter 5 contains analyses of mechanical stresses induced by the electromagnetic force in nondestructive multiturn solenoids, and optimization of multilayered windings. Similar material but for strong magnetic fields is given in Chapter 6. Different types of solenoids with quasi force-free winding configurations are treated in Chapter 7. Problems related to the generation of strong pulsed magnetic fields in single-turn magnets and the induced deformations in solids are described in Chapter 8, while Chapter 9 contains features related to the generation and resulting effects of ultrahigh magnetic fields in destructive single-turn magnets. Here, one also finds details on induced shock waves in conductors, electric explosions, and a numerical simulation of skin layer explosion. The final Chapter 10 treats various theoretical and practical aspects of magnetic cumulation when the magnetic field is being compressed by processes such as explosions and the electromagnetic force. To conclude, this book should be of interest for researchers in pure physics of super-strong magnetic fields, for engineers who develop devices that generate such fields, and for those who use them in various fields of practical application. Also, graduate students shall be able to greatly benefit from it.
