Let \(D\subset\mathbb C^n\) be a bounded domain. For \(p\in D\) let \(\mathcal F_D(p)\) denote the family of all biholomorphic mappings \(f:D\to f(D)\subset\mathbb B^n\) with \(f(p)=0\), where \(\mathbb B^n\) stands for the unit ball. For \(f\in\mathcal F_D(p)\) define \(s_D(p,f):=\sup\big\{r>0: \mathbb B^n(r)\subset f(D)\big\}\) and let the squeezing function \(s_D:D\to(0,1]\) be given by the formula \(s_D(p):=\sup\big\{s_D(p,f): f\in\mathcal F_D(p)\big\}\). It is clear that the squeezing function is invariant under biholomorphic mappings. The authors present various properties of \(s_D\). In particular, they prove that \(s_D(p)=\max\big\{s_D(p,f): f\in\mathcal F_D(p)\big\}\) and \(s_D\) is continuous. Moreover, they study those domains (called holomorphic homogeneous regular domains) for which \(\in\{s_D(p): p\in D\}>0\). A special stress in put on the case of planar domains.
