Let \(G\) be a locally compact amenable group, \(A(G)\) the Fourier algebra of \(G,\) and \(B\) a completely contractive Banach algebra. In this paper, surjective linear maps \(T:A(G)\to B\) which preserve zero products (i.e., for every \(a,b\in A(G)\) where \(ab=0\) we have \(T(a)T(b)=0\)) are considered. The main result states that a completely bounded surjective linear map \(T:A(G)\to B\) which preserves zero products is a weighted homomorphism in the case when \(B\) is faithful and factors weakly. Moreover, an equivalent condition is given for such a map to be a homomorphism. Note that all matrix spaces and \(C^{\ast }\)-algebras are faithful and factor weakly. Moreover, being \(C^{\ast }\)-algebras, they are completely contractive Banach algebras. It is also known that each bounded linear map from an operator space into a matrix space or into a commutative \(C^{\ast }\)-algebra is completely bounded. So, the above result in particular implies that, if \(B\) is a commutative \(C^{\ast }\)-algebra or a matrix space and \(T:A(G)\to B\) a continuous and surjective linear map preserving zero products, then \(T\) is again a weighted homomorphism.NEWLINENEWLINELet now \(G_{1}\) and \(G_{2}\) be two amenable locally compact groups and suppose that \(T:A(G_{1})\to A(G_{2})\) is a completely bounded surjective linear map which preserves zero products. The last result of the paper states that then there are a homomorphism \(\Phi :A(G_{1})\to A(G_{2}) \) and an invertible element \(\tau \) in the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of \(G_{2}\) such that \(T=\tau \Phi\).NEWLINENEWLINEThe main tool in the proofs is the definition of a condition for Banach algebras with an operator space structure which is similar to the property \((\mathbb{B})\) introduced in [\textit{J. Alaminos} et al., Stud. Math. 193, No. 2, 131--159 (2009; Zbl 1168.47029)]. The author calls this condition \textit{the property} \(\mathbb{(B)}\) \textit{completely} and shows that the Fourier algebra of every locally compact amenable group has the property \((\mathbb{B})\) completely.
