A Banach space \(X\) has the diameter 2 property (D2P) if every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball \(B_X\) has diameter 2; \(X\) has the strong diameter 2 property (SD2P) if every convex combination of slices of \(B_X\) has diameter 2 [\textit{T. A. Abrahamsen} et al., J. Convex Anal. 20, No. 2, 439--452 (2013; Zbl 1274.46027)]. It is known that every relatively weakly open subset of \(B_X\) contains some convex combination of slices of \(B_X\). Thus, if a Banach space has the SD2P then it will automatically have the D2P. By now, it is known that the converse implication is not true (see [\textit{R. Haller} and \textit{J. Langemets}, Proc. Est. Acad. Sci. 63, No. 1, 2--7 (2014; Zbl 1321.46012); \textit{M. D. Acosta} et al., ``Stability results of diameter two properties'', J. Conv. Anal. 22, No. 1, 1--17 (2015); \textit{E. Oja}, Proc. Est. Acad. Sci. 63, No. 1, 8--10 (2014; Zbl 1302.46007)]). For example, the space \(c_0\oplus_2 c_0\) has the D2P but fails the SD2P. \noindent The authors start by establishing that every convex combination of slices in \(B_{c_0\oplus_p c_0}\), where \(p\geq1\), has diameter at least 1. Therefore, the space \(c_0\oplus_2 c_0\) is far from having arbitrarily small convex combinations of slices. The main theorem states that every Banach space containing an isomorphic copy of \(c_0\) can be equivalently renormed such that it has the D2P but it fails the SD2P in an extreme way, that is, it contains convex combinations of slices with arbitrarily small diameter. The paper lists some open questions, in particular it is asked whether there is a strongly regular Banach space with the D2P.
