    This book presents a new approach to analysis and control of linear time-varying (LTV) systems using the formalism of systems over a ring of operators. A linear time-varying system is not defined as usually by a transfer matrix or in state-space form, but as an intrinsic mathematical object, namely a finitely presented module over a ring of operators. This module is shown to capture the information contained in the system equations up to the various equivalent ways to write these equations (in different orders, and using various variables). The approach proposed in this book, based on algebraic analysis, allows to formulate and solve several key problems in the control of LTV systems and to display the algebraic structure of an LTV system which is hidden, for instance, when the gain scheduling approach is used. The algebraic-analytic approach can also show to mathematicians how algebraic analysis can be used to solve engineering applications. The reader is assumed not only to have a background in algebra and analysis, which is standard for people having an engineering degree, and to know the basic problems and methods of classical control theory, but to know a large number of mathematical notions and results that are not usually familiar to control theorists.
