This paper establishes a link between the geometry of Krein spaces and the algebraic theory of \(*\)-semigroups. More precisely, the following problem is considered and solved: Provide necessary and sufficient conditions on an element \(u\) of a \(*\)-semigroup \(S\) so that it generates a Pontryagin fundamental symmetry of any reproducing Hilbert space over the semigroup. The solution of the problem is obtained in Proposition 1, that gives an answer in a restricted case, and the main Theorem 6. The condition on \(u\) is given by a simple algebraic condition; namely \(u=u^*, u+u=0\) and \(u+s \neq s\) for only a finite number of elements \(s \in S\). The article contains a number of illustrating examples.
