Let \(T(x)=\sum_{ord(G)\leq x}t(G)\), where t(G) denotes the number of direct factors of a finite Abelian group \textit{G. E. Krätzel} [Acta Arith. 51, 369-379 (1988; Zbl 0633.10044)] proved that \[ T(x)=c_ 1x \log x+c_ 2x+d_ 1x^{1/2} \log x+d_ 2x^{1/2}+R(x) \] with suitable constants \(c_ 1,c_ 2,d_ 1,d_ 2\) and \(R(x)\ll x^{5/12} \log^ 4x\), reducing the estimation of R(x) to the estimation of \(\Delta\) (1,1,2,2;x), the error term in the asymptotic formula for the function generated by \(\zeta^ 2(s)\zeta^ 2(2s)\). The author's main result is that \[ \Delta (1,1,2,2;x)\quad \ll \quad x^{\alpha} \log^ 4x, \] where \(\alpha =(8\ell -14k+5)/(16\ell -38k+15)\), and (k,\(\ell)\) is an exponent pair satisfying \(3k\leq \ell \leq 2k+1/2\). With the exponent pair \((k,\ell)=(9/56+\epsilon, 37/56+\epsilon)\) of Huxley and Watt the exponent \(\alpha =45/109+\epsilon =0.412844...+\epsilon\) is attained, and so \(R(x)\ll x^{45/109+\epsilon}\) holds. \(\{\) Reviewer's remark: with the recent exponent pair \((k,\ell)=(89/570+\epsilon, 89/570+1/2+\epsilon)\) of M. N. Huxley a slight improvement, namely \(\alpha =1149/2788+\epsilon =0.412123...+\epsilon\) may be obtained\(\}\).
