It was conjectured by Bruen and Thas that the size of a maximal partial spread (i.e., a maximal set of pairwise disjoint lines) in \(PG(3,q)\) is at most \(q^2-q+2\) (unless it is actually a spread). The author provides the first counterexample to this conjecture by constructing a maximal partial spread of 45 lines in \(PG(3,7)\).
