Using the ordinary (``hybrid'') large sieve, the author gives an elegant proof of the spectral large sieve inequality (\(1 \leq \Delta \leq K\)) \[ \sum_{K\leq\kappa_j\leq K+\Delta}\alpha_j {\biggl|\sum_{n\leq N}a_nt_j(n)\biggr|}^2\ll_\varepsilon (KN)^\varepsilon(K\Delta + N)\sum_{n\leq N}|a_n|^2.\leqno(1) \] Here, \(\rho_j(n) = \rho_j(1)t_j(n)\) is the \(n\)-th Fourier coefficient of the Maass wave form corresponding to the eigenvalue \(\lambda_j = \kappa_j^2 + 1/4\) of the non-Euclidean Laplacian, \(\alpha_j = |\rho_j(1)|^2/\cosh(\pi\kappa_j)\), and \(H_j(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty t_j(n)n^{-s}\) is the corresponding Hecke series. The author gives a history of (1), proved also in \textit{Y. Motohashi}'s monograph [Spectral theory of the Riemann zeta-function, Cambridge University Press (1997; Zbl 0878.11001)]. Applications of (1) are discussed but, more importantly, the author proves a generalization of (1), varying the functional structure of the sums in such a way that the terms in the sums are allowed to depend explicitly on the respective eigenvalue in a flexible way.
