The monograph covers comprehensively experimental and theoretical methods to study semiconductor surfaces and interfaces. These research topics include aspects of physics, chemistry as well as of electronic devices, and are a very rapidly developing scientific area. The book includes more than 1500 references and is divided into nineteen chapters. The book is the third revised edition (1st ed. 1993, 2nd ed. 1995). In particular, the 19th chapter has been completely redesigned: The band lineup at all types of semiconductor interfaces can now be consistently described by one unifying theoretical concept, the continuum of interface-induced gap states. In the introduction the author presents the history of the subject from Braun's discovery of the rectifying behaviour of metal-semiconductor contacts in 1874 until the unifying concept mentioned above.
