A classification result is achieved for subnets of local nets of von Neumann algebras satisfying the standard assumptions of the algebraic approach to quantum field theory [\textit{R. Haag}, Local quantum physics. Fields, particles, algebras. 2nd., ed., Texts and Monographs in Physics. Berlin: Springer (1996; Zbl 0857.46057)]. This result applies to nets \(\mathcal F\) which have trivial superselection structure, i.e., nets for which every representation of \(\mathcal F\) satisfying the Doplicher-Haag-Roberts selection condition of localizabilty, is a multiple of the vacuum representation [\textit{R. Conti, S. Doplicher} and \textit{J. E. Roberts}, Commun. Math. Phys. 218, No. 2, 263-281 (2001; Zbl 1049.81044)]. It is shown that for such nets, every subnet \(\mathcal B \subset \mathcal F\) is of the form \({\mathcal F}^G_1\otimes I\) for a suitable decomposition \(\mathcal F = {\mathcal F}_1\otimes{\mathcal F}_2\) of \(\mathcal F\), and where \({\mathcal F}^G_1\) is the fixpoint subnet of \({\mathcal F}_1\) under the action of a compact group \(G\). This result corresponds to earlier work of these and other authors [\textit{J. Langerhole} and \textit{B. Schroer}, Commun. Math. Phys. 1, 215-239 (1965; Zbl 0138.45103); \textit{R. Longo} and \textit{K.-H. Rehren}, Rev. Math. Phys. 7, 567-597 (1995; Zbl 0836.46055); \textit{S. Carpi}, Lett. Math. Phys. 45, 259-267 (1998; Zbl 0909.46063) and Lett. Math. Phys. 47, 353-364 (1999; Zbl 0946.47055)] and comprises a related classification result of \textit{D. R. Davidson} [Classification of subsystems of local algebras. Ph.D. Thesis, University of California at Berkeley (1993)]. The authors exhibit two applications of their classification: In the case of free fields, it turns out that the only Haag-dual covariant proper subnet is the fixed point net \({\mathcal F}^{{\mathbb Z}_2}\) under the action of the internal symmetry group. On the other hand, the application to the case of theories with at most countably many sectors provides a partial answer to a problem posed by \textit{S. Doplicher} [Progress and problems in algebraic quantum field theory. Albeverio, Sergio (ed.) et al., Ideals and methods in quantum and statistical physics. In memory of Raphael Hoegh-Krohn (1938-1988). Vol. 2. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 390-404 (1992; Zbl 0790.46056)], concerning the relationship between an observable net \(\mathcal A\) and the subnet \(\mathcal C\) generated by the local implementations of space-time translations. It is shown that under favorable conditions, the Haag dual net \({\mathcal C}^d\) associated to \(\mathcal C\) is identical to the fixed point net \({\mathcal F}_{\max}^G\) of \(\mathcal F\) under the action of the maximal gauge group [\textit{S. Doplicher} and \textit{J. E. Roberts}, Commun. Math. Phys. 131, 51-107 (1990; Zbl 0734.46042)].
