For any \(r\geq 1\), let \({\mathcal A}^r\) denote the class of complex matrices \(A=[a_{jk}]^\infty_{j, k=1}\) such that its absolute Schur \(r\)th power \(A^{[r]}\equiv [|a_{jk} |^r]\) defines a bounded linear operator on \(\ell^2\). In a previous paper [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 20, No. 3, 596-605 (1999; Zbl 0924.47016)], \textit{P. Chaisuriya} and \textit{S.-C. Ong} showed that \({\mathcal A}^r\) forms a Banach algebra under the norm \(\|A\|_r =\|A^{[r]} \|^{1/r}\) and the Schur product (also called Hadamard product or entry-wise product). In the present paper, the authors prove a Banach space duality within the class of such algebras, which is in analogy to the classical duality between the spaces of compact, trace-class, and bounded operators on \(\ell^2\). To be more precise, let \({\mathcal K}^r\) be the class of matrices \(A\) such that \(A^{[r]}\) is compact on \(\ell^2\), let \(({\mathcal A}{\mathcal S})\) be the class of \(A=[a_{jk}]\) such that \(\|A\|_{{\mathcal A}{\mathcal S}}\equiv \Sigma_{j ,k} |a_{jk}|\) is finite, and let \({\mathcal M}({\mathcal A}^r,({\mathcal A} {\mathcal S}))\) be the space of all matrices \(B\) for which the Schur product \(A \cdot B\) of \(B\) with any \(A\) in \({\mathcal A}^r\) is in \(({\mathcal A}{\mathcal S})\). It is shown (Theorem 3.2) that \({\mathcal M}({\mathcal A}^r,({\mathcal A}{\mathcal S}))\) forms a Banach algebra under the norm \(\sup\{\|A\cdot B\|_{{\mathcal A}{\mathcal S}}: A \in{\mathcal A}^r\), \(\|A\|_r\leq 1\}\) and the Schur product. The duality alluded above provides in Theorems 3.10 and 3.14 that the dual space of \({\mathcal K}^r\) is isometrically isomorphic to \({\mathcal M}({\mathcal A}^r,({\mathcal A}{\mathcal S}))\) and the dual space of the latter is isometrically isomorphic to \({\mathcal A}^r\).
