The authors succeed in developing a general class multi-mode FENE models, which can replicate the dynamics of FENE chain in arbitrary flow kinematics at a comparable cost. The model is based on an approximate form of the spring force law, which remains invariant under the transformation to normal coordinates. The models are tested in standard steady-state and time-dependent rheometrical flows, and in the flow kinematics obtained from a DNS database of a turbulent channel flow over a wide range of polymer and flow parameters. This new class of models seems to have potential in its application to other areas such as direct numerical simulation of turbulent drag reduction by dilute polymer solutions.
