The paper under review exploers the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle, and in particular its sensitivity to the field of definition. Specifically, the author describes a threefold \(X\) and an extension \(L/K\) of number fields such that \(X_K\) fails the Hasse principle for reasons explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction, but \(X_L\) fails the Hasse principle for reasons that cannot be explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. The threefold \(X\) is a Châtelet surface bundle over a curve. The author also gives a general argument conditional on a well-known conjecture of \textit{M. Stoll} [Algebra Number Theory 1, No. 4, 349--391 (2007; Zbl 1167.11024)] that there are many examples of this sort.
