The paper studies the mass layer effects, the so-called energy trapping, through which the vibration is confined under the mass layer and decays rapidly outside it. Specifically, the paper investigates the energy trapping of thickness-shear (TSh) and thickness-twist (TT) modes in a finite-size mass sensors for measuring the density and thickness of the layer (quartz crystal microbalances with a partial mass layer). First, the governing equations for shear-horizontal (SH) or anti-plane motions with only one displacement component are used in the framework of linear anisotropic elasticity. This paper neglects some small elastic constants. Then, by considering free vibrations, the stated boundary value problem is solved by using the separation of variables and Fourier series. As a result, the authors examine how the resonant frequencies, the mode shapes, and the energy trapping are affected by the mass layer and its dimension. Numerical results present (i) the effects of a longer mass layer on the distribution of the trapped modes, (ii) the effects of a longer (shorter) mass layer on the number of trapped modes, (iii) the effects of a thicker (thinner) mass layer on the number of trapped modes, (iv) the effects of the mass layer on the displacement distributions at the plate and bottom surfaces, and also at the middle cross-section.
