Let \(B=(b_{ij})\) be an integer \(n\times m\) matrix of rank \(m\). Let \(L\) be the lattice spanned in \(\mathbb{Z}^n\) by the columns of \(B\). Let \(I_L\subseteq S=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]\) the ideal generated by all pure binomials \(x^{u^+}-x^{u^-}\) where \(u=u^+-u^-\) runs over \(L\). To \(L\) we can associate a finite simplicial complex \(\Delta^0_L\) called the \textit{linked Scarf complex} whose canonically associated chain complex is contained in the minimal free resolution of \(S/I_L\). If equality occurs we say that \(I_L\) is a Scarf lattice ideal. There are some well-known examples of Scarf lattice ideals, (cf. [\textit{I. Peeva} and \textit{B. Sturmfels}, Math. Z. 229, No. 1, 163--194 (1998; Zbl 0918.13006)] and [J. Am. Math. Soc. 11, No. 2, 363--373 (1998; Zbl 0905.13005)]). The present paper contains an interesting collection of results on Scarf lattice ideals that includes: - Theorem 2.2 describes the minimal generators of a Scarf lattice ideal. - Theorem 2.4 shows that a Scarf lattice ideal defining a monomial curve must be generic. - Theorem 3.1 states that the initial ideals of a Scarf lattice ideal may also be minimally resolved by certain Scarf complexes. - Theorems 4.3 and 4.4 show that for a Scarf lattice ideal, being Cohen-Macaulay (resp. Gorenstein) is equivalent to satisfying the \(S_2\) condition (resp. being principal). Finally, the paper presents some examples of Scarf lattice ideals.
