The author describes a new approach towards explaining \(p\)-adic congruences for special values of \(L\)-series by interpolating the ordinary cohomology of arithmetic groups. More specifically, using the adelic language, the author studies cohomology on a locally symmetric space \(S\) associated to a reductive \(\mathbb Q\)-group \(G\) which depend on irreducible representations of the corresponding Lie-group and in particular on the associated highest weight. For a prime number \(p\) and a suitable lattice in the representation space the cohomology with \(p\)-adic coefficients on \(S\) then turns out to depend on \(p\)-adic information concerning the weight if \(G\) is split semisimple. A large part of the paper is concerned with defining suitable Hecke operators and checking their properties. The paper deals very specifically with the group \(\mathrm{GL}_2\) but emphasizes that the main tools also work for more general groups. In the final sections we find an application to denominators of Eisenstein classes and many hints on a forthcoming paper of the author and Mahnkopf.
