Let \(V\) be an \(m\)-dimensional vector space over a totally real number field \(F\) with a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form \(( , )\). Assume that \(V\) is anisotropic over \(F\) and that the signature of \(V\) at the archimedean places of \(F\) is \(((p,2), (m,0), \ldots, (m,0))\) with \(m=p+2\) and \(p\geq 0\). Let \(G= R_{F/ \mathbb{Q}} \text{GSpin} (V)\), and let \(D\) be the associated Hermitian symmetric space. Given a compact open subgroup \(K\) of \(G(\mathbb{A}_f)\), let \(X_K = G(\mathbb{Q}) \backslash (D \times G(\mathbb{A}_f)/K)\) be the associated locally symmetric variety. Then a certain weighted sum of algebraic cycles of \(X_K\) define a modular symbol, whose parameter is a pair consisting of a positive semidefinite rational symmetric matrix \(\beta\) and a weight function \(\varphi\). The subspace of the Chow group spanned by these cycles as \(\beta\) and \(\varphi\) vary is stable under the Hecke operators. In this paper, the author gives an explicit description of the cup product of the Betti cohomology classes attached to such modular symbols. He also applies the Siegel-Weil formula to prove that the intersection numbers of the special cycle classes occur as the Fourier coefficients of the restrictions, to subgroups of the form \(Sp(k) \times Sp(l)\), of Siegel-Eisenstein series for \(Sp(n)\).
