Let \(A\) be an Artin algebra, \(\text{mod }A\) the category of all finitely generated right \(A\)-modules, \(\text{rad}^ \infty\text{mod }A\) the infinite power of the Jacobson radical \(\text{rad}(\text{mod }A)\) of \(\text{mod }A\), and \(\Gamma_ A\) the Auslander-Reiten quiver of \(A\), with the translation \(\tau_ A\). A component \(\mathcal C\) of \(\Gamma_ A\) is called semiregular if it does not contain both a projective module and an injective module, and is called generalized standard if \(\text{rad}^ \infty(X,Y) = 0\) for all modules \(X\) and \(Y\) from \(\mathcal C\). Moreover, a section \(\Delta\) of \(\mathcal C\) is a connected full subquiver of \(\mathcal C\) satisfying the following conditions: (1) \(\Delta\) contains no oriented cycle; (2) \(\Delta\) meets each \(\tau_ A\)-orbit in \(\mathcal C\) exactly once; (3) each path in \(\mathcal C\) with end-points in \(\Delta\) lies completely in \(\Delta\). Finally, \(A\) is a tilted algebra if \(A = \text{End}_ H(T)\) with \(H\) a hereditary Artin algebra and \(T\) a tilting \(H\)-module. The following important new characterization of tilted algebras is proved in the paper: an Artin algebra \(A\) is a tilted algebra if and only if \(\Gamma_ A\) has a connected component \(\mathcal C\) with a faithful section \(\Delta\) such that \(\text{Hom}_ A (X,\tau_ A Y) = 0\) for all modules \(X\), \(Y\) in \(\Delta\). The same characterization has been proved independently by the reviewer [Osaka J. Math. 30, 515-527 (1993)]. The above result is an essential improvement of the known criterion proved by \textit{C. M. Ringel} [in Tame algebras and integral quadratic forms (Lect. Notes Math. 1099, 1984; Zbl 0546.16013)]. The second main result of the paper is as follows. For a semi-regular component \(\mathcal C\) of \(\Gamma_ A\) and \(B = A /\text{ann}({\mathcal C})\) the following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(\mathcal C\) is generalized standard and contains no oriented cycle, (2) \(\mathcal C\) contains a finite section and no short cycle \(X \to Y \to X\), (3) \(\mathcal C\) contains a finite section and no short chain \(\tau_ A X \to Y \to X\), (4) \(B\) is a tilted algebra and \(\mathcal C\) is a connecting component of \(\Gamma_ B\). The equivalence of (1) and (4) is also proved in [\textit{A. Skowroński}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 46, No. 3, 517-543 (1994; Zbl 0828.16011)].
