Let \(G\) be a group generated by a set \(W\subset G\) and let \(\tau_W\) be a topology on \(W\). The authors prove a theorem which gives conditions under which the topology \(\tau_W\) can be extended to a (unique) topology \(\tau_G\) on \(G\) in such a way that \(W\in \tau_G\) and all translations in \((G,\tau_G)\) are continuous. Two consequences of this theorem are also proved.
