A monoid M and a lattice L are called algebraic if there exists a universal algebra A such that the endomorphism monoid of A is isomorphic to M and the subalgebra lattice of A is isomorphic to L. It is proved that there exists a monoid M and an algebraic lattice L (containing a three-element chain) such that M and the three-element chain are algebraic but M and L are not algebraic. This answers a problem of \textit{B. Jónsson} [Topics in universal algebra (Lect. Notes Math. 250) (1972; Zbl 0225.08001)] negatively. (Remark: On page 385 c should be added as a nullary operation to the set of fundamental operations of \({\mathfrak A}\) in order to ensure \(3\cong Su {\mathfrak A}\).)
