Let \(U_ 1,...U_ n\) be commuting unitary operators in a Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\) and let A be a positive bounded linear operator in \({\mathcal H}\). Define \(Q_ jT:=T-U_ jTU_ j^{-1}\) for any bounded linear operator T on \({\mathcal H}\). Then the \((n+1)-tuple (U_ 1,...,U_ n,A)\) is said to be semi-hyponormal iff \(Q_{j_ 1}...Q_{j_ m}A\geq 0\) for any set \(\{j_ 1,...,j_ m\}\) of integers such that \(1\leq j_ 1<...<j_ m\leq n\). This is a generalization of the notion of a semi-hyponormal operator introduced by the author [Sci. Sin. 23, 700-713 (1980; Zbl 0441.47036)]. It is shown how some results for semi-hyponormal operators can be transferred. The singular integral model for a semi-hyponormal tuple is established, and it is used to give a formula for the joint spectrum in terms of the joint approximate point spectrum. A modification of Pincus' principal function leads to a trace formula, and Putnam's inequality on the measure of the spectrum can be generalized. Finally for a similarly defined hyponormal \((n+1)\)-tuple of operators the corresponding results are indicated.
