In this paper, the author classifies finite groups for which the Hasse diagram of the lattice of subgroups is the union from a set of paths from the trivial group to the full group and which are disjoint otherwise. It is shown that the finite groups with this property are exactly the cyclic groups of prime power order and semidirect products of two groups of prime order (possibly the same prime). These graphs and groups are called birdcage graphs and birdcage groups in the paper. The author then continues to study the subgroup structure of these finite groups and provides some basic results on groups and their semidirect products for the convenience of the reader.
