In 1982 the author constructed an embedded complete minimal surface M in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 3\) of genus one and with total curvature \(C=-12\pi\). The surface has three parallel ends, where two ends are of catenoid type and one end is flat. In the present paper the author proves that these properties are characteristic for M. In a forthcoming paper a uniqueness theorem will be proved for the surfaces of Hoffman and Meeks with three ends of catenoid type. In the meantime another uniqueness theorem was found by \textit{D. Bloß} [Elliptic functions and complete minimal surfaes (German), Diss. FU Berlin (1989)] and F. J. Lopez concerning the minimal surface of genus one and with \(C=-8\pi\).
