The authors prove the following Theorem. Let \(X,Y\) be vector spaces and \(T:D(T)\subset X\to X\), \(U:D(U)\subset Y\to X\), \(V:D(V)\subset X\to Y\) be linear operators such that \(D(T)\subset D(V)\) and \(R(V)\subset D(U)\). Supposing that \(T\) is one-to-one and onto, the linear operator \(T+UV: D(T)\subset X\to X\) is one-to-one and onto if and only if the linear operator \(I+VT^{-1}U: D(U)\subset Y\to D(U)\) is one-to-one and onto. In this case, the inverse operator \((T+UV)^{-1}:X\to D(T)\) has the expression \[ (T+UV)^{-1}= T^{-1}-T^{-1}U(I+VT^{-1}U)^{-1}VT^{-1}, \] where \(D(V)\) and \(R(V)\) denote the domain and the range of the operator \(V\), respectively. For an application of the theorem, the authors investigate the spectral problem for some specially perturbed bounded linear operators on general Banach spaces.
