The author describes a systematic approach to a reasonably general and powerful theory of unitary representations of infinite dimensional Lie groups. This approach is inspired by the concepts and requirements of mathematical physics and provides a unifying framework for a substantial class of representations and several interesting phenomena. The author focuses in the paper on the so-called semibounded representations, which means that the self-adjoint operators \(\operatorname{id}\pi(x)\) from the derived representation are uniformly bounded below for all \(x\) in some non-empty open set of the Lie algebra of our group. The long term goal of the theory is to understand the decomposition theory and irreducible semibounded representations by their geometric realizations. In the present paper the author explains how the concept of semibounded representations leads to a fruitful interaction between convexity theory, Lie theory, symplectic geometry and complex analysis, and discusses semibounded representations of the diffeomorphism group of the circle, the Virasoro group, the metaplectic representation on the bosonic Fock space and the spin representation on the fermionic Fock space. The main new results and aspects presented in this paper are: {\parindent=5mm \begin{itemize}\item[1.] The author provides tools to verify whether unitary representations can be realized in spaces of holomorphic sections of line bundles and to calculate their momentum sets. \item[2.] The author analyzes the convexity property of adjoint and coadjoint orbits of \({\mathcal V}(\mathbb S^1)\) and \({\mathfrak{vir}}\), which leads to an identification of the class of irreducible semibounded representations with the unitary highest weight representations and their duals. \item[3.] The author observes that the Fock representations of \(\text{Sp}_{\text{res}}(\mathcal{H})\) and \(\text{O}_{\text{res}}(\mathcal{H})\) are semibounded and obtains various results on adjoint and coadjoint orbits of the corresponding Banach-Lie groups. \end{itemize}}
