In this paper the null controllability problem for a one dimensional damped hyperbolic equation is investigated. The control (function of time only) acts as a forcing term in the right hand side of the equation. In a paper of the author (joint with C. F. Martin, J. Dauer and B. Belinskiy) which is to appear in SIAM J. Control Optim., it is shown that the control system is null controllable in a time \(T\) that equals twice the time it takes for a wave to travel from one end of the string to the other. Here the author gives sufficient conditions to reduce the control time \(T\). The approach is based on previous results of the author on the spectral analysis for the corresponding evolution operator, which is nonselfadjoint, in a suitable product space.
