The authors consider the case of the motion of a spinning top in a Newtonian field with a quadratic potential. Two papers in the 1980's, one of which is [\textit{O.I. Bogoyavlenskii}, Sov. Phys., Dokl. 31, 399--401 (1986; Zbl 0608.70007)], showed the surprising result that this system is integrable for a general quadratic potential.\N\NThe goal of this paper is to explore the link between this problem and the Darboux dressing chain for matrix Schrödinger operators, and -- in particular -- with a special reduction of period-one closure of the Darboux dressing chain for Schrödinger operators with matrix potentials.\N\NThis paper provides very little background on the subject of dressing trains and their application to the spectral theory of Schrödinger operators, so a reader new to the area would need to explore the extensive bibliography, perhaps starting with [the second author et al., Funct. Anal. Appl. 27, No. 2, 81--96 (1993; Zbl 0813.35099)].
