Stability in Hamiltonian systems.

For close to integrable Hamiltonian systems the author studies the trajectories behaviour developing the idea about connection between trajectories stability and optimality of the action functional. It is suggested a qualitative method for the investigation of trajectories based on a variational principle connected with Hamiltonian systems. In most cases this method gives estimates, allowing to solve the problem of trajectories stability by parts of variables. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe first four chapters are devoted to general questions of the theory. Chapter 5 contains the results of the KAM-theory for systems with periodically time-dependent Hamiltonian. Here the small divisors appearance is explained with the aid of invariants of canonical transformations. In Chapter 6 a series of conditions is given for the possibility to consider Hamiltonian system trajectories as geodesics of the Finsler metric, that allows on the base of optimality to separate some class of trajectories admitting estimates on impulses variation. Such trajectories fill out invariant sets (toroidal sets) possibly even without their continuity, which are characterized by insensitivity to resonances and small parameter magnitude. However in spite of their important applications in concrete mechanical problems the continuity absence gives not the conclusion about stability in the large. Chapter 7 gives tools for the trajectories behaviour investigation near resonances for one important situation when the Hamiltonian basic part depending only on impulses is the Lyapounov function of the unperturbed system in the resonance point neighborhood, but the perturbing part of the Hamiltonian depends on time periodically. This is the central part of the reviewed monograph. Chapter 8 is devoted to the particle motion estimate in a potential force field and extends the previous chapters results to the nonperiodical case. The last Chapter 9 applies the methods for optimal trajectories estimation to the planetary three-body problem.
