Stabilized Stokes elements and local mass conservation
Stability and convergence of numerical methods for boundary value problems involving PDEs (65N12) Finite element, Rayleigh-Ritz and Galerkin methods for boundary value problems involving PDEs (65N30) Stokes and related (Oseen, etc.) flows (76D07) Finite element methods applied to problems in fluid mechanics (76M10)
The stabilization of lowest-order Stokes finite elements is discussed. The authors derive error estimates in terms of stabilization parameters. Numerical tests show that the proposed estimates are indeed sharp. Local mass conservation properties are also analyzed, and pressure enhancement modifications are studied. Numerical tests illustrate the theoretical results for continuous and discontinuous pressure solutions.
