Let \(G\) be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field and let \(W\) be its Weyl group. The paper relates the strata of \(G\), introduced in earlier work of the author, to the almost special representations of \(W\). It is shown that, when \(W\) is of simply laced type, the representation attached to a stratum belongs to the set of almost special representations. The proof proceeds by an explicit analysis by type. The behavior under tensoring with the sign representation is also described, with a small number of explicit exceptions.
