Let \(U\) be a Banach-Lie group and let \(G\) be a compact subgroup. The author proves that Lie subgroups of \(U\) sufficiently close to \(G\) are compact. Also, there is an integer \(N\) such that all finite groups sufficiently close to \(G\) have abelian normal subgroups of index \(\leq N\). Some other related results are proved. The author uses different notions of weak topologies to give the term ``sufficiently close a precise meaning in each context.
