Surjective isometries on function spaces with derivatives

From MaRDI portal

This paper characterizes surjective isometries, not necessarily linear, on complex Banach spaces \((A,\|\cdot\|)\) of continuous functions on a compact space \(K\), whose norm is of the form \(\|f\|=\|f\|_K+\|d(f)\|_Y\), where \(d:A\to B\) is a surjective complex linear operator into another function space \(B\) on a compact space \(Y\). Assuming natural separation and density properties on the Shilov boundaries \(\partial A\) and \(\partial B\), the authors prove that every such isometry \(T:A\to A\) is determined on these boundaries by a unimodular constant \(c\in\mathbb{T}\), homeomorphisms \(\phi:\partial A\to\partial A\) and \(\psi:\partial B\to\partial B\), a continuous unimodular function \(u:\partial B\to\mathbb{T}\), and clopen subsets that decide where conjugation occurs. The result generalizes the known descriptions of isometries on \(C^1([0,1])\) and on spaces of analytic functions on the unit disc whose derivatives belong to Hardy or bounded classes.
