The Piltz divisor problem in number fields using the resonance method

From MaRDI portal

The Piltz divisor problem concerns the asymptotic behavior of the number of ways a positive integer can be expressed as a product of \(k\) positive integers. This problem is a natural generalization of the classical Dirichlet divisor problem. In this paper, the authors study this problem over number fields.\N\NLet \(\mathbb K\) be a number field of degree \(m\) and let \(k\) be a positive integer. The number field analogue of the \(k\)-fold divisor function is defined by\N\[\Nd_{\mathbb K}^{(k)}(n) = \sum_{ N(\mathfrak a_1 \mathfrak a_2 \cdots \mathfrak a_k)=n } 1,\N\]\Nwhere the sum runs over \(k\)-tuples of nonzero ideals in \(\mathbb K\) whose product has norm \(n\). The definition of Dedekind zeta function \(\zeta_{\mathbb K}\) yields\N\[\N\zeta_{\mathbb K}(s)^k = \sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{d_{\mathbb K}^{(k)}(n)}{n^s}.\N\]\NThe Piltz divisor problem concerns the error term\N\[\N\Delta_{\mathbb K}^{(k)}(x) = \sum_{n \le x} d_{\mathbb K}^{(k)}(n) - \underset{s=1}{\mathrm{Res}}\left( \zeta_{\mathbb K}(s)^k \frac{x^s}{s} \right).\N\]\NFor \(mk \ge 2\), the authors use the resonance method and prove that\N\[\N\Delta_{\mathbb K}^{(k)}(x) = \Omega\!\left( (x\log x)^{\frac{mk-1}{2mk}} (\log\log x)^{\beta} (\log\log\log x)^{-\frac{mk+1}{4mk}R} \right),\N\]\Nwhere \(\beta\) and \(R\) are explicit constants depending on the Dirichlet densities of primes that are unramified and split into exactly \(\nu\) distinct prime ideals of degree \(1\) in \(\mathbb K\). This estimate improves that of \textit{K. Girstmair} et al. [Acta Arith. 117, No. 2, 187--206 (2005; Zbl 1079.11047)].
