The alternating functions of three and of four variables.

Es sei \(x_1 + x_2 + x_3 = a\), \(x_2 x_3 + x_3 x_1 + x_1 x_2 = b\), \((x_1 + wx_2 + w^2x_3)^3 = c\), wo \(w^2 + w + 1 = 0\), so ist \(c(x_1 + wx_2 + w^2 x_3)^3 = (a^2 - 3t)^3\), und sowohl \(x_1 x_2 x_3\), als auch \((x_2 - x_3) (x_3 - x_1) (x_1 - x_2)\) lassen sich rational durch \(a, b, c\) ausdrücken, wie schon länger bekannt ist. Setzt man \(x_1 + x_2 + x_3 + x_4 = s\), \(x_1 + x_2 - x_3 - x_4 = z_1\), \(x_1 + x_3 - x_2 - x_4 = z_2\), \(x_1 + x_4 - x_2 - x_3 = z_3\), ferner \(z_1^2 + z_2^2 + z_3^2 = a\), \(z_1 z_2 z_3 = b\), \(z_1^4 + z_2^4 + z_3^4 = c\), \((z_1^2 + wz_2^2 + w^2z_3^2)^3 = d\), so sind \(s\), \(a/b\), \(c/b\), \(d/b\) vier Funktionen, durch welche sich die symmetrischen Funktionen und die Quadratwurzel aus der Diskriminante von \(x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4\) rational ausdrücken lassen. Ob ähnliche Sätze für eine Zahl von \(n > 4\) Variabeln existieren, ist zurzeit nicht bekannt.
